Varicocele: Ancient Condition Affects Testicles, Causes Discomfort
Varicocele, a condition affecting the testicles, has been recognised since ancient civilizations. It occurs when veins in the scrotum become enlarged and twisted, causing discomfort and swelling. This condition predominantly affects the left testicular vein, with over 90% of cases occurring there.
The spermatic cord, which supports the testicles, contains the spermatic vein and the pampiniform plexus - a complex network of veins. These structures drain deoxygenated blood from the testicles and epididymis to the inferior vena cava. Varicocele occurs when these veins malfunction or become compressed, leading to blood backflow and swelling. This condition is more common on the left side due to the unique angle at which the left testicular vein joins the renal vein.
Symptoms of varicocele include pain, swelling, and a heavy feeling in the testicles. The first description of this condition in men was made by the ancient Greek physician Celsus around the 1st century AD.
