Codex Labs, Phyla, and Fourth Era: Revolutionizing Skincare with a Focus on Microbiomes

In the ever-evolving world of skincare, three innovative startups – Codex Labs, Phyla, and Fourth Era – are making waves by prioritizing the health and balance of the skin's microbiome.

Codex Labs: A Pioneer in Microbiome-Friendly Skincare

Founded by Dr. Barbara Paldus, a Ph.D. holder from Stanford University with over 40 US patents, Codex Labs is a skincare startup dedicated to creating products that support the skin's microbiome, manage inflammation, and treat conditions such as acne, eczema, and psoriasis. Their range of products, including the AntuComplex®, BIACOMPLEX®, PreservX®, and patent-pending SHAANTCOMPLEXTM collections, are vegan, cruelty-free, and come in sustainable packaging. The product information is likened to 'nutrition labels' for skincare, providing customers with a clear understanding of what they're putting on their skin.

PreservX®, a patented technology in Codex Labs' probiotic skincare line, is based on the fermentation of Lactobacillus, a microorganism that helps maintain the skin's microbiome balance. This approach allows Codex Labs' products to focus on balancing the skin's microbiome rather than using traditional harsh chemicals like benzoyl peroxide.

Phyla: A New Approach to Acne Care

Phyla, led by Dr. Yug Varma, who holds a Ph.D. in Bioorganics from Johns Hopkins University and was a postdoctoral fellow at UC San Francisco, is taking a unique approach to acne care. They use a bacteriophage to target the overgrowth of acne bacteria, offering a more gentle and effective solution for those struggling with acne. Phyla's products, including the Phresh gel cleanser, the Phortify Serum, and the Phluff Moisturizer, form a comprehensive three-step System for enhancing overall skin health.

Phyla's latest Series A funding round, led by Shiseido, was held on Dec 7, 2023. This investment will undoubtedly propel Phyla forward in its mission to revolutionize acne care.

Fourth Era: The Future of Microbiome-Friendly Cosmetics

Fourth Era, a startup working on microbiome-friendly cosmetics, aims to become market-strong within the next 2-3 years. They are developing natural, vegan, water-free, pH-, biom-, and hormone-conscious formulations designed to support the skin's microbiome and overall health. ADA Cosmetics International GmbH, nominated for sustainable resources innovations, may also be involved in microbiome-focused products.

These three startups – Codex Labs, Phyla, and Fourth Era – are paving the way for a future where skincare is not just about appearance, but about promoting the health and balance of the skin's microbiome. Their innovative approaches and commitment to sustainability are setting new standards in the skincare industry.
