Unsafe Swimming Prohibited: City Council Bans Rhine River Bathing Due to Life-Threatening Risks
The city of Dormagen, located in Germany, has announced a swimming ban in its section of the Rhine River, effective from August 31st. This decision was made following an urgent call by the city council and is supported by numerous other cities along the Rhine that have already passed similar bans.
The ordinance, explained by the First Deputy Mayor and Head of the Ordnance Department, Fritz Bezold, aims to prevent further tragic accidents due to underestimating the Rhine and its currents. The river is a heavily trafficked waterway with strong currents, waves, and fluctuating water levels, posing significant risks to swimmers, even those who are experienced.
The ban prohibits any activity in water deeper than knee-high. However, there are exceptions for official duties of authorities, rescue services, sports clubs, approved events, brief watercraft entry and exit, and fishing within regulations. The ordinance provides a basis for law enforcement to intervene and penalize violations, with potential fines of up to 1,000 euros.
Mayor Erik Lierenfeld (SPD), the incumbent mayor confirmed by the 2025 election results, emphasised the need for the ban, stating that the Rhine's hazards extend not only to the river itself but also to the shore area. People standing at the shore or in shallow water can be swept away by waves or currents and pulled into the river.
The city administration of Dormagen encourages other cities and municipalities along the Rhine to follow suit in implementing similar swimming bans for the safety of their citizens.
