In the heart of Bavaria, an ongoing investigation has been shrouded in mystery for nearly two years. The leaflet affair, involving the Bavarian Economics Minister Hubert Aiwanger, has been a topic of interest since a report in the "Süddeutsche Zeitung" on August 25, 2023.

At the centre of the affair is a retired teacher, suspected of passing on an antisemitic leaflet to the newspaper. However, the teacher has refused to make a statement in the investigation, adding to the intrigue.

The leaflet in question, dating back to Aiwanger's school days, might have been learned about by the newspaper from a school essay archived at the Dachau Concentration Camp Memorial. Yet, the teacher's disciplinary procedure is being handled by an unspecified spokesperson for the Bavarian State Prosecutor's Office, with no clear updates on its current status.

The investigation focuses on whether the former teacher may have violated a confidentiality obligation. If found guilty, the worst-case scenario for the teacher could be a reduction or complete withdrawal of their pension.

Despite the ongoing affair, it did not harm Aiwanger in the state election that took place in Munich. The Free Voters, who received 15.8 percent of the votes, an increase of 4.2 percentage points compared to the 2018 election, continued their coalition with the CSU, and Aiwanger remained deputy minister president.

The Regensburg Public Prosecutor's Office could not prove that the former teacher had passed on the leaflet. Criminal proceedings against the teacher were discontinued, but the disciplinary procedure continues.

The German Press Agency has reported on the leaflet affair, providing updates as they become available. For the latest information, it is recommended to consult official Bavarian government sources, education authorities, or recent news outlets specializing in Bavarian politics.
