Fire at a Chlorine Warehouse in Catalonia: What You Need to Know

A blast at a chlorine warehouse belonging to Clim Waterpool in Catalonia, Spain, led to a fire involving around 70 tons of chlorine meant for pools. So far, the blaze has forced almost 160,000 people across five districts near the city of Barcelona to take shelter indoors.

According to reports from Gazeta.ru and Infobae, the fire broke out around 2:20 AM local time. Authorities have asked residents in Vilanova i la Geltrú, Sant Pere de Ribes, Cubelles (Barcelona province), Conesa, and Calafell (Tarragona) to remain indoors and close their windows and doors. No injuries have been reported, with additional emergency teams dispatched to the area. Traffic has been restricted partially to support the efforts of the rescue teams.

The Catalan firefighters managed to control the fire, preventing it from spreading to nearby warehouses. They are now keeping a close eye on the toxic plume emitted by the fire while monitoring its movement and level of danger.

A total of 60 firefighters, along with 20 specialized teams, including a hazardous materials team and a mobile chemical reconnaissance laboratory, are dealing with the emergency situation. As the fire is posing several complexities due to the hazardous materials involved, the efforts to put it out are proving to be challenging.

Residents have been warned to remain inside their homes to protect themselves from harmful smoke and fumes. Authorities have recommended keeping doors and windows closed and wearing masks if necessary. The situation remains serious, but local authorities continue their efforts to bring the fire under control and ensure public safety.
