Toddler experiences near-fatal fentanyl overdose, parent detained by Austin Police Department.
Isha Garcia, a 29-year-old woman, is currently facing child abuse charges following an incident at a Days Inn hotel in Albuquerque where her 1-year-old daughter reportedly overdosed on fentanyl.
The incident took place on August 5, 2025, at the Days Inn by Wyndham on Candelaria. Albuquerque Fire Rescue was called to the scene, and a housekeeper administered Narcan to the child, which saved her life.
According to reports, Garcia admitted to a housekeeper that her daughter had ingested a pill dropped on the floor. The housekeeper, who regularly carries Narcan while working due to the prevalence of drug use at the hotel, was able to act quickly and save the child.
Garcia was arrested on Wednesday and is currently being held at the Metropolitan Detention Center. She appeared in court for a pretrial detention hearing, where Judge Lucy Solomon ruled that Garcia is a danger to both her children and the community, citing her criminal history.
Investigations revealed that officers executed a search warrant of the hotel room and found a blue pill, broken glass pipe, used and unused foil, and an empty methadone bottle. However, no fentanyl was directly linked to Garcia in the hotel room.
Garcia admitted the glass pipe was hers, but insisted the foil was not. An officer wrote in the complaint that it was hard to believe Garcia would not properly discard fentanyl if she saw it on the bed.
On the day of the overdose incident, Garcia said her mother picked her up to get a dose of methadone. She also mentioned that she had a friend bring food to the hotel room after going to the clinic.
Garcia is charged with child abuse in relation to the overdose incident. Two of her children are reported to be safe and receiving appropriate care. This case is a stark reminder of the ongoing concerns about child welfare issues in the community, with the Children, Youth and Families Department (CYFD) working under state and federal oversight to improve child protection efforts.
