Title Test: Highlighting the Second Beta Trial

United Kingdom unions Prospect and Bectu explored the potential use of Spotlight, an upcoming privacy-focused tool for workers, during a recent event. Slated for public release in March, Spotlight offers unions the ability to track various aspects of work life, including working hours, use of work apps, and distances traveled.

One of Spotlight's standout features is its user-owned data. Unlike other tools, the app does not permit third-party data mining or hidden surveillance. Users have complete control over what the app monitors, such as commute times, working conditions, well-being, screen time, and physical activity levels.

The objective of the afternoon's discussion was to outline plans for worker tech and to utilize the #datagovernance hashtag to amplify worker voices. Andrew Pakes, UNI Global Union's Young Workers Lab, along with ProspectUnion and Bectu teams, participated in the conversation.

Union campaigns will be able to harness Spotlight's potential in uncovering instances of wage theft, a significant concern given its prevalence as the top workplace crime in numerous countries. The app aims to combat the strain on workers' well-being caused by the "always-on" culture, promoting a healthier work-life balance.

Slated for public release in April 2020 as an open-source app, Spotlight is being developed by the Young Workers Lab at UNI Global Union. This initiative is a multi-stakeholder project aimed at empowering workers through the responsible use of new technology. More information about the tech and union advisors involved can be found on their respective platforms.
