"Survey reveals that more than half of Gen Z individuals have already experienced hearing issues, underlining the frequent risks associated with prolonged exposure to loud music."

In a bid to combat the rising issue of hearing loss and tinnitus caused by exposure to loud music, earplug manufacturers and live music promoters are making a concerted effort to encourage Generation Z to prioritise hearing safety.

Recent research conducted by the Royal National Institute for Deaf people (RNID) reveals that over half (58%) of Generation Z have experienced hearing issues due to loud music. Despite this, 35% of respondents do not plan on wearing earplugs or hearing protection.

To address this concern, the focus is on making earplugs more appealing to young music enthusiasts. The strategy involves producing high-fidelity, comfortable earplugs that preserve music quality. These earplugs are designed to allow listeners to still enjoy live music without compromising auditory safety.

Free distribution of earplugs at venues and campaigns highlighting hearing protection as a matter of self-care and professionalism are also part of the strategy. Generation Z’s unique openness about health and wellness, including hearing protection, is being leveraged to fuel social media and workplace wellness programs advocating earplug use.

RNID's Audiology Manager, Franki Oliver, stated that the survey findings highlight the frequent occurrence of dangerous side effects from exposure to loud music. However, she did not specify any new statistics or percentages related to the survey findings. Nevertheless, she expressed encouragement as more people would be willing to take steps to protect their hearing if they knew they'd still enjoy the full live music experience.

The RNID online hearing test is available for individuals who are concerned about their hearing. The test can be accessed by clicking the provided link. For those who may be hesitant about using earplugs, the test offers a simple way to assess their hearing health.

In summary, key measures include providing free or low-cost earplugs at live events, running education and awareness campaigns on hearing health, often via social media, positioning hearing protection as part of professionalism and self-care, and incorporating hearing protection in wellness initiatives by employers and promoters. These efforts respond directly to Generation Z's values and feedback, aiming to reduce hearing loss risks while preserving enjoyment of loud music.

  2. In light of the increasing awareness about nutrition and its impact on overall health-and-wellness, experts are suggesting that individuals should also be mindful of their dietary habits to maintain optimal mental health.
  3. As part of a comprehensive health-and-wellness approach, some medical-conditions clinics are now offering counseling services to help patients cope with the stress and anxiety associated with their chronic illnesses, focusing on promoting mental health alongside physical health.
