Surgical Procedure for Over-projecting Ears!
Prominent Ear, also known as Otapostasis, is a condition where the ears protrude abnormally. This body abnormality, which often becomes visible within the first three months after birth and during the growth and development phase, can cause psychological issues and affect self-esteem, potentially impacting a child's overall performance in growing years.
The structural formation of Prominent Ear varies from patient to patient. In some cases, the Concha portion of the ear, the Antihelix, and the Scapha may be underdeveloped. For these patients, surgical correction is possible.
Otoplasty surgery, a procedure that lasts about 2.5 to 3 hours, is used to treat Prominent Ear or Otapostasis. The surgery involves reshaping and repositioning the ear cartilage. An incision is made behind the patient's ear, inside the skin fold, at the point where the ear joins with the head.
In some cases, the underdeveloped Antihelix of the ear can be corrected or reconstructed from the root during Otoplasty. Suturing may be used to reconstruct a less prominent Antihelix in some patients. Unusually large earlobes, which can also cause Prominent Ear, are removed surgically during Otoplasty.
After the procedure, ears are bandaged to protect their new position. Patients usually experience some swelling, mild discomfort, and itching initially. The stitches, if non-dissolvable, are typically removed within 7 days. Return to work or school is often possible after about one week of recovery.
During the initial healing period, it is important to avoid sleeping on the side to prevent pressure on the ears. Strenuous activities and sports should be avoided for 2 to 6 weeks, depending on the surgeon’s advice. Swelling and bruising improve markedly within 1 to 2 weeks; residual swelling may last a few months.
Otoplasty can be performed on patients aged 8 years and above, with both children and adults benefiting from the surgery. The main cause of Prominent Ear is unknown but could be due to inheritance. It is important to note that 1 to 2 people out of every hundred may have Prominent Ear. Continuous pressure on the cartilage of the ear during breastfeeding may worsen the condition.
