Summertime Employees at WollEngel in Dusseldorf

Got the scoop on Düsseldorf's WOLLEngels, who've been keepin' the homeless cozy in winter with hand-knitted gear? Well, these angels ain't slowin' down – they're sharin' the summer love with a new initiative!
Tanja Elle and Sabine Schmitz, the brains behind WOLLEngels, saw the struggles the homeless face in the hot months. Sunburn, dehydration, and heatstroke – no one deserves that. That's why they dreamed up "Summer in a Backpack," kickin' off in 2021 with 50 backpacks in partnership with Flingern mobil. From there, they took off like a rocket: 600 backpacks in 2022, and this year, they're swingin' for 800!
These bad boys are stuffed with all the goodies a street-dweller needs in the summer. Think a reusable steel water bottle, a cap, sunglasses, a towel, a first aid kit, some cosmetics, protection, a little light, and a boost of sugar with glucose tablets. Mosquito spray's in there this year thanks to kid feedback. How sweet is that?
Astrid-Lindgren Elementary School kids, who'd taken up the homelessness cause during their project week, wanted to help again. They crafted 800 good luck charms.
Of course, WOLLEngels couldn't do it alone. They scored sponsors and donations, like:
- Stepstone footin' the bill for 800 fancy water bottles.
- Wempe chippin' in with a 5,000 Euro donation when they won the "Ein Radschlag für Düsseldorf" award. Employee Caroline Marques joined in to pack these lifesavers.
- Küchler forwarding agency lendin' a hand with logistics, sharin' their warehouse space and helpin' pack the 800 bags.
Now, here's where the bags find their way to the right people. Flingern mobil, the drug counseling service komm:pass, SKFM, Knackpunkt, Düsseldorf Drug Help, the Vision:teilen goodnight bus, aXept!, the Horizon counseling center, Café pur, the station mission, Shelter, Franzfriends, and the Ariadne team are all pitchin' in to distribute 'em.
