A new study by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) indicates that school mask mandates may be vital in safeguarding children from the coronavirus. Dr. Henry Bernstein, a pediatrician and immediate past member of the CDC Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP), emphasized the importance of teaching children proper mask use, suggesting fun mask designs to make mask-wearing more appealing and advising parents to lead by example.

The study, while having some limitations such as being an observational study that can't prove causation, not controlling for county-level teacher vaccination rates and school testing data, using a small sample size, and focusing on cases in children and adolescents under 18 years old, found that schools without mask requirements experienced significantly more COVID-19 cases in students.

In contrast, schools with mask requirements and other interventions had lower daily case rates of pediatric COVID-19. Dr. Bernstein expects a lot of activity over the next 4 to 8 weeks regarding vaccines for different age groups, especially younger children.

Dr. Eric Cioe-Peña, director of global health at Northwell Health, suggested that the Delta variant may be a factor in these findings, as it causes a higher level of virus in children's respiratory passages.

Given these findings, Dr. Cioe-Peña advised parents with children in schools without mask requirements to lobby for rule changes, move to a district that requires masking, or mask their children themselves to protect them.

The CDC identified Florida as a region with a particularly high COVID-19 rate among children where schools did not implement mask mandates, especially as Florida moves to end state-level immunization requirements for school attendance in the 2024/25 school year.

In counties requiring masks in school, the average was roughly 16 new pediatric cases per 100,000 children per day. In contrast, in counties without school mask mandates, there were an average of about 35 new pediatric cases per 100,000 children per day over a 2-week span.

Dr. Bernstein stressed the importance of avoiding touching the face while wearing a mask and encouraged handwashing and physical distancing as additional precautions. He also mentioned that the FDA has an independent advisory committee that makes recommendations for vaccine approval.

In conclusion, the CDC study finds that school mask mandates, in combination with other prevention strategies, including COVID-19 vaccination, are critical to reduce the transmission of COVID-19 in schools. Parents and educators should carefully consider these findings and take appropriate measures to protect children from the virus.
