Delinquent Payments and the Struggling Residents of Rhein-Kreis Neuss, North Rhine-Westphalia
Repeated Delays in Payment by Multiple Suppliers
Stagnating wages and rising costs have taken their toll on residents, causing a surge in late payments for bills. In 2023, over 10% of the population in North Rhine-Westphalia found themselves owing money to mortgage or rent companies, utility providers, and consumer loan lenders at least once during the past year. This figure marks a significant escalation from the previous years - 6.6% in 2021 and 7.0% in 2022.
With the hardest blow landing on utility providers, 6.9% of the population was unable to keep up with their electricity, heating, and water bills in 2023. This percentage has doubled from 2021 levels (4.4%), and climbed from 5.0% in 2022. The utility companies show no mercy when it comes to late fees, adding fuel to the fire of struggling families' financial woes. Utility providers, usually corporations with city and municipalities as majority shareholders, could put an end to this ruthless practice if they so desired.
When it comes to consumer and consumer loan payment delays, the situation hasn't fared much better. 4.4% of the population has faced difficulties meeting these obligations, up from 2.0% in 2021 and 2.5% in 2022.
