Remchinger's family expresses heartfelt appreciation for the aid they received.
"Life's a Breeze with the Right Company"
Alvaro Fernandes is spending this day surrounded by the people he cherishes most - his family. His four-year-old grandson, Tiago, his daughter, Lisa-Maria (24), and his wife, Susanne (59), are all there. Only his daughter Martha (21), who lives in Karlsruhe, is missing from the joyous gathering. This comradery is thanks, in part, to the swift aid of total strangers. After collapsing from a heart attack at a station in early April, these strangers took over his care without a second thought. "I wish I could've thanked them," laments the project manager who moved to Germany from Angola in 1986 and has lived in Wilferdingen with his wife for 26 years.
The Station Mishap
Remembering the incident vividly, Alvaro was on his way home from work in Karlsruhe, sitting in the train as usual. Trouble began when his ticket fell during a ticket check; bending down to grab it triggered a pressure on his chest. Thinking it was merely his usual back problems, he tried to alleviate it, but found himself growing weaker by the moment. Too feeble to stand on his own, he asked a young woman for help to reach the train door before it departed. "She put away her phone and rushed to my aid immediately," recalls Alvaro, who is also actively involved in the local evangelical church with his wife.
At the Wilferdingen station, Alvaro's condition worsened. Collapsing on the platform, he didn't make it to the nearby bench where he intended to call his wife. Scrambling for his phone, he was aware that his attempts to reach his family had failed.
Two women traveling to Pforzheim postponed their journey, then helped put him in the recovery position. It was decided to call paramedics, and someone brought him water, while another comforted him, assuring him that help would soon arrive. Others raced to the front of the station to lead the paramedics, and finally, Alvaro heard the doctor take charge.
"I may not know who provided aid or how many people were there, but I am infinitely grateful for their assistance," says Fernandes.
He hopes that his gratitude will reach them. Their quick action likely prevented a dire situation. After his hospital stay and rehab, he feels much better and aims to return to work as soon as possible.
The Power of Selflessness
Alvaro's wife, Susanne, who works in a kindergarten in Ersingen, shares the relief. When her husband was trying to reach her, she was with her grandson Tiago at the playground, she recalls. "I often pray for help when I see an ambulance," Susanne shares. It wasn't until later that she discovered her husband was the one being transported to the hospital.
"Strangers might look the other way, but they don't," Alvaro reflects. "At least in our case, they proved that wrong."
