Released: The water from Borlefzen's lake

The swimming lake in Borlefzen, known for its size and high number of bathers, has reopened following a brief closure due to the presence of blue-green algae. The lake, which is listed as an EU bathing lake under the EU Bathing Water Directive (2006/7/EG), experienced a ban on bathing two weeks prior due to the detection of blue-green algae.

To combat the algae, measures including the use of a 'mowing boat' and aeration pumps were implemented. The mowing boat was used to remove the algae from the lake, while the aeration pumps were employed to increase the oxygen content of the water.

The district health department, responsible for monitoring the water quality of the lake according to the EU Bathing Water Directive, confirmed that no blue-green algae are currently visible in the water. Furthermore, the latest water samples showed no exceedance of limit values, indicating that the lake is now safe for bathing.

Despite the temporary closure of the swimming area, the lake remained open for other facilities during the ban. The swimming lake at the Vlotho campsite in Vlotho-Borlefzen is now open to bathers once again.

It's worth noting that blue-green algae can cause skin irritation, redness, or rashes in bathers. However, with the successful removal of the algae and the water meeting the required safety standards, the risk of these issues has been significantly reduced.

The low water level of the Weser may have contributed to the development of blue-green algae in the swimming lake. As the water levels stabilise, it is hoped that future occurrences of this issue can be minimised.

The district health department continues to monitor the water quality of the EU bathing lake monthly to ensure its safety for bathers. With the lake now open, locals and visitors alike can once again enjoy a refreshing swim in Borlefzen's popular swimming lake. The bathing ban was lifted on September 3, 2025.
