Rapidly escalating transmission of the new coronavirus variant named Nimbus

In the midst of the ever-evolving global battle against Covid-19, a new coronavirus strain named XBB.1.5 is causing concern among scientists and health officials. This strain, also known as Nimbus in some reports, is said to be a descendant of the highly infectious Omicron and has been the cause of numerous cases in countries like the UK, China, Singapore, and Hong Kong.

The British daily newspaper "Daily Mail" reports that scientists in the UK are warning of a potential infection wave this summer due to XBB.1.5. Data from the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) shows that the percentage of people testing positive for Covid has risen to its highest level this year and is already 97 percent higher than in March.

While Germany was the first country to detect XBB.1.5 in March, according to the Robert Koch Institute (RKI), the current spread of corona in Germany is at a low level. However, the RKI states in its weekly report that 16.7 percent of all corona cases in May were attributable to XBB.1.5.

The World Health Organization (WHO) has classified XBB.1.5 as a "variant under monitoring." As of early 2025, the dominant variants globally include LP.8.1, though its circulation is declining, and NB.1.8.1, which is also a Variant Under Monitoring (VUM) and has been increasing in prevalence.

The symptoms of XBB.1.5 are said to be similar to other Covid variants, with fatigue, fever, muscle pain, and sore throat being common signs. However, XBB.1.5 is believed to be more infectious than other active Covid variants.

Vulnerable Individuals Encouraged to Get Vaccinated

As the threat of XBB.1.5 looms, health officials urge vulnerable individuals to get vaccinated. The UKHSA warns that many people's immunity to the virus has likely waned due to previous infections and older vaccinations, putting them at higher risk.

Fortunately, the current Covid vaccines, developed to combat Omicron descendants, are expected to remain effective against XBB.1.5, according to experts.

As the weather gets warmer and people become more social, XBB.1.5 has the potential to cause an increase in cases, according to Professor Lawrence Young, virologist at the University of Warwick. However, the scale of this potential infection wave is difficult to predict.

It's crucial to note that there's no evidence to suggest that XBB.1.5 is causing more severe illnesses or deaths compared to earlier strains. While it can still be deadly for vulnerable groups, adds Young.

As the global situation remains dynamic, ongoing surveillance and vaccine updates are crucial components of public health strategies. Stay informed, stay safe, and keep following the guidance of health and government officials in your region.

Focus on Emerging Variants

While XBB.1.5 was a significant variant, the current focus is on emerging variants like NB.1.8.1. The global surveillance of Covid-19 continues to be essential, with a risk-based approach to manage the pandemic.
