Protests at RG Kar Medical College: Three Outspoken Junior Doctors Relocated to Different Institutions Against Their Preferenced Locations
Kolkata, West Bengal: A trio of vocal junior doctors, Debashis Haldar, Aniket Mahato, and Asfaqullah Naiya, who had been actively involved in the protests following the rape and murder of a fellow medicial professional at RG Kar Medical College, have been transferred to medical institutions different from their preferred choices.
Initially placed at RG Kar Medical College, Kolkata, Raiganj Medical College for Mahato, Gajol sub-divisional hospital for Haldar, and Purulia Medical College for Naiya, these junior doctors allege that these transfers are arbitrary and retaliatory in nature, as they were not aligned with their choices during the official counselling.
In an interaction with media, Mahato expressed their willingness to serve anywhere in the state yet questioned the sudden and inexplicable changes in their postings. He suggested that these actions may have been taken due to their active participation in the protests.
The doctors had sought an audience with the Health Secretary, Narayan Swarup Nigam, but were reportedly refused. Following the denial, the trio staged a protest outside Nigam's office to demand clarification and seek justice.
