Proposal for Safeguarding Workers from Radiation Risks Solicited by Commission for Consideration
In a bid to support those in need, a local church has set up a Give & Take Box for non-perishable food items. The box, located at the back of the church, is managed by the church's committee 'Charity & Social Affairs' and is intended for individuals who may have financial difficulties towards the end of the month.
The Give & Take Box operates on the principles of safety, fairness, and respect, mirroring the practices of local food pantries and banks. Only sealed, unexpired, and safe food items are accepted, such as canned goods without damage, sealed packages, non-perishable foods, and sometimes fresh produce or boxed items. Unsafe donations like homemade food, unsealed packaging, damaged cans with rust or spillage, unfrozen meat, or expired baby food are prohibited.
The box is free to use, and individuals are encouraged to take what they need without strict eligibility checks. This approach fosters dignity and mutual support, allowing community members to help one another. However, to ensure equitable access for everyone, individuals are advised to limit their take from the box to a maximum of three items per week.
Refrigerated products are not acceptable for donation, and it is not allowed to place opened packages inside the food box. The box is not checked for who can take something; instead, individuals are expected to take what they need.
Pastoral Assistant Gertrud Sivalingam mentioned that the box is being set up as a trial. If the trial is successful, the committee may consider setting up similar boxes in other locations. Consideration should be given to other people who may also benefit from the food donations.
When taking food, individuals may be encouraged to bring bags or boxes to carry items comfortably and respectfully, as seen in other pantry setups. The food items in the box include canned goods, pasta, and packages.
It is advisable to check with the specific church or organization for any additional or particular rules they apply. The Give & Take Box at this church is just one example of how local communities can come together to support those in need.
