Preventing Sensory Overload Crises: A Developer Crafts an AI App for Anticipatory Predictions

In an exciting development for neurodivergent individuals, UK-based software developer and neurodiversity advocate, Jennifer Opal, has created an AI-powered health tech app called ssensimm. The app, currently available on Apple Watch, is designed to help prevent sensory overload and provide personalized coping strategies for neurodivergent individuals.

Opal, who was diagnosed with ADHD in her late 20s, has experienced numerous meltdowns due to sensory overload. This personal experience inspired her to create ssensimm, filling a gap in patient care, particularly for those waiting for a diagnosis and without support.

Ssensimm integrates with wearables such as the Apple Watch, Oura Ring, or Ultrahuman Ring to collect real-time sensory inputs. This data is used to predict potential sensory challenges and suggest personalized coping strategies. The app also considers personal data like fatigue, user patterns, location, and even menstrual cycle to provide tailored suggestions.

One of the unique features of ssensimm is its ability to plan daily activities and travel routes with sensory needs in mind. It can also message a trusted person if the user is struggling, providing an additional layer of support.

For those concerned about data privacy, ssensimm's architecture is local, meaning data is saved on users' devices. To ensure offline support and privacy, ssensimm integrates with Claude AI for pattern analysis and forecasting sensory challenges.

Opal is open to exploring ways for ssensimm to reach more people without the need for a wearable. She plans to launch ssensimm at the end of 2025, with the ssensory app for ssensimm set to be available on iOS.

In a significant update to the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5), which was updated in 2013, a dual diagnosis of both autism and ADHD is now considered. This development further highlights the importance of tools like ssensimm in supporting neurodivergent individuals.

Ssensimm is not monetized or sold, prioritizing user privacy and accessibility. Early access to ssensimm can be signed up for on its website. As Opal continues to develop and refine ssensimm, it promises to be a valuable resource for neurodivergent individuals, helping them navigate their daily lives with greater ease and understanding.
