Physical Agony Traced Back to Emotional Distress
In a heartfelt appeal to fellow medical mystery patients, Sarah Garone, a nutritionist and freelance health writer from Mesa, Arizona, encourages perseverance, self-discovery, and the honing of intuition. Garone's own journey, marked by chronic pain and a 18-month chase for answers, has led her to a world of mind-body medicine.
Garone's symptoms, which included muscle twitches, electrical zaps down the legs, and deep, dull muscle pain in all limbs, initially led her down a path of hypochondriac-like obsession with potential causes, such as multiple sclerosis and ALS. This obsession seemed to fuel its intensity, as it began during a period of enormous stress.
Despite visits to nine practitioners, including neurologists and rheumatologists, none could determine a cause for the symptoms. It was during this time that Garone decided to address her chronic pain from a mind-body standpoint. She went to a therapist to identify sources of stress and anger in her life, having suspected that the origin of her symptoms might be emotional, due to the mind-body connection.
Garone's symptoms began to recede as she used these tactics and improved certain measures of self-care. She started paying attention to her emotions in relation to her pain and recognized patterns where she often felt physical symptoms the day after highly stressful situations. She journaled, meditated, read books about mental-meets-physical health, and talked back to her pain, telling it that it had no hold over her and was emotional rather than physical.
This transformative journey has left Garone free from pain 90% of the time and able to usually point to an emotional trigger when she experiences a tell-tale pang. She is thankful for the lessons she learned during this time, including becoming her own advocate and healer.
Today, Garone can be found sharing down-to-earth health and nutrition info, as well as (mostly) healthy recipes, on her blog, A Love Letter to Food. Her story, "Felder des Lebens," is a testament to her resilience and the power of the mind-body connection. Garone is grateful for the lessons she learned and hopes to inspire others to trust their intuition and embrace a holistic approach to health.
