In the Minsk region of Belarus, a growing concern has arisen with the increasing number of tick bites being reported. The Minsk Regional Center of Hygiene, Epidemiology, and Public Health recently provided details on the issue.

For the first seven months of 2025, a total of 1674 cases of tick bites were registered, with the most dangerous districts being Minsk, Molodechno, Myadel, Slutsk, and Soligorsk. July 2025 saw 444 cases recorded, although this number is lower than the first month of summer, where 817 cases were reported in June.

Ticks are small bloodsuckers, resembling a linseed seed, with a brown or red body and a dark shield covering half of the abdomen. They are most commonly found in forests, shaded and moist areas, with the highest numbers on forest paths and trails with grass along the edges. It's important to note that ticks do not sit on trees or "fall" onto people and animals; they climb onto tall grass and wait for a "victim", attaching themselves to fur or clothing and biting the skin.

To prevent tick bites, it is essential to take protective measures, particularly during peak tick activity in late spring, early summer, and autumn. These measures include wearing long-sleeved shirts and long trousers, with trousers tucked into socks to reduce skin exposure. Using light-colored clothing to spot ticks more easily is also advised. Applying insect repellent when venturing into grassy, wooded, or high-risk areas is another precaution, as is staying on footpaths and avoiding long grass or dense vegetation. Lastly, checking yourself, children, and pets carefully for ticks immediately after outdoor activities and removing any attached ticks promptly is crucial.

If you are bitten by a tick, early removal is critical. Use fine-tipped tweezers to grasp the tick close to the skin and pull it out steadily without twisting. After removal, clean the bite area with antiseptic.

For treatment after a tick bite, monitoring for symptoms is essential. This includes watching for the hallmark bullseye rash or flu-like symptoms (tiredness, headaches, muscle or joint pain) appearing within days to weeks post-bite. Seek medical attention promptly if these occur. In addition, consideration can be given to a post-tick bite herbal protocol designed to support the immune system and combat potential infections.
