Irreversible Electroporation (IRE) is a revolutionary non-thermal ablation modality that is making waves in the medical field, particularly in cardiology and oncology. This innovative technique uses high-intensity electric fields to create permanent nanopores in cell membranes, triggering apoptosis and permanent cell death without relying on heat.

The mechanism of action involves delivering high-voltage electric pulses through probes inserted into the target tissue. These pulses irreversibly permeabilize cell membranes, leading to loss of cell function and apoptosis. The IRE process is called "irreversible" because the damage causes the cell membrane pores to remain open, preventing self-repair. This characteristic also means that IRE isn't subject to heat-sink effects that reduce the efficacy of thermal ablation methods like cryoablation and microwave or radiofrequency ablation.
