New Cancer Research Project DECIPHER-M Launches with €5.5M BMBF Funding

A new research project, DECIPHER-M, has started with a focus on enhancing cancer treatment and predicting individual metastasis risk. Coordinated by Prof. Jakob Nikolas Kather, the project involves partners from Aachen, Essen, Heidelberg, Mainz, Munich, and Dresden. It has received initial funding of approximately 5.5 million euros from the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF).

The project, set to run from 2023 to 2030, aims to better understand cancer cell spread using artificial intelligence. It will employ a multimodal approach, connecting various data sources such as tissue samples, X-ray images, and genetic information. The Uniklinik RWTH Aachen is the named partner city, with specific institutions from other cities yet to be disclosed.

Prof. Kather, who is leading the project, hopes to improve treatment options and predict individual metastasis risk. The total planned investment for DECIPHER-M is around nine million euros.

DECIPHER-M, with its collaborative approach and multimodal AI strategy, seeks to advance cancer treatment and prediction. The project, coordinated by Prof. Kather, is off to a strong start with substantial funding and a comprehensive plan.
