A grim state in the German Woods: Only one out of five trees is thriving

Nearly a fifth of trees inspected display signs of vitality and resilience.

Heed the alarm bells ringing in the German forests as heat and drought take their toll. Agriculture Minister Alois Rainer promises help for the forest owners, which could be a game-changer, especially for the CSU politician.

The German woods remain in a critical state, according to recent findings from the 2024 Forest Condition Survey. While the weather last year was somewhat kinder, conditions have barely shown any improvement compared to previous years. Astoundingly, merely one out of every five trees exhibits signs of good health. Minister Alois Rainer emphasized the financial aspects of these woodlands and advocated for relief for the beleaguered forest owners.

Since 1984, experts from the federal states have been meticulously examining the health of forest trees across Germany as part of this annual survey. Overall, the damage has been at a sky-high level since 2019, according to the Ministry of Agriculture. Spruce, pine, beech, and oak trees continue to suffer from the prolonged effects of drought and excessive heat since 2018.

"Our forests are under relentless pressure. I witness this strain in my own woods, as well as across the country," said Minister Alois Rainer. Forests serve as "habitat, climate protector, and economic factor." A sustainable approach to woodland management shall indeed be a crucial task in the foreseeable future, asserted the CSU politician, adding, "That's why we're easing the burden on forest owners instead of piling unnecessary bureaucracy upon them."

"The state of our forests is grappling with immense climate pressure," declared Andreas Bitter, the head of the Association of Forest Owners AGDW. However, it is essential to acknowledge that the health of forests varies significantly from region to region. Bitter called for "region-specific solutions for forest management to maintain and evolve our woods." He urged the federal government to expedite the "improved funding framework conditions" promised in the coalition agreement.

Greenpeace sounded the alarm, echoing the concerns of many climate and forest experts. "Immediate logging cessation in broad-leaved forests is long overdue," said Dorothea Epperlein, a forest expert from Greenpeace. "Instead of indiscriminately felling trees and weakening the forest ecosystem, we must consistently protect our natural broad-leaved mixed forests."

Insights:

  • As of 2024, proposed solutions to address climate stress on German forests involve the diversification of forests, climate-adapted forest management practices, national strategies, and monitoring progress through regular updating of climate risk analyses [1-3].
  • The Diversification of Forests approach aims to create structurally diverse mixed stands of deciduous and coniferous species to enhance the resilience of forests. However, reforesting damaged areas remains challenging [2].
  • The Funding Scheme for Climate-Adapted Forest Management provides financial support to private and municipal forest owners who commit to higher standards of forestry management, aiming to increase the climate resilience of forests [3].
  • As of now, the available funds have been depleted, and new applications are currently on hold [3].
  • The German Federal Government is in the process of developing a national framework for climate change adaptation, involving land management plans with climate adaptation measures by 2033 [1].
  • The strategy for the national adaptation framework includes monitoring progress and updating climate risk analyses regularly, with the next report scheduled for 2027 [1].

  • The Ministry of Agriculture's 2024 Forest Condition Survey reveals that climate change has resulted in a high level of damage to forests across Germany since 2019, with only one out of every five trees showing signs of good health. This underscores the need for climate-adapted forest management practices, such as the diversification of forest types.
