Marcy Borders: The "Dust Lady" of 9/11

Marcy Borders, a 28-year-old employee, was working on the 81st floor of the North Tower during the September 11, 2001 attacks. She was famously known as the "Dust Lady" after a photograph taken of her covered in concrete dust shortly after the attacks[1][2][3].

On that fateful day, Borders headed for the stairs as the building started shaking violently. As she made her way down, she witnessed chairs, office supplies, and people crashing down outside past the windows[4]. Firefighters ran past her, shouting "Run, and don't look back!"[5].

A stranger pulled Borders to safety amidst the chaos of the collapsing South Tower[6]. The photograph of Borders, taken by freelance photographer Stan Honda in a nearby lobby, was published in newspapers and magazines worldwide[7].

After surviving the attacks, Borders lived with significant trauma related to 9/11. She battled stomach cancer, which she believed was linked to her exposure to the toxic dust and debris from the collapse of the towers[4]. Despite her struggles, Borders' daughter, Noelle, referred to her as a hero[8].

Borders' post-9/11 life was marked by ongoing struggles, including the impact of both the physical and psychological aftereffects of the attacks, and ultimately her battle with cancer, which profoundly affected her health and well-being[4]. Unfortunately, she passed away in 2014 at the age of 42, leaving behind a decade-long battle with depression and substance abuse[4].

It's unclear whether Borders' stomach cancer was directly caused by the toxic fumes she inhaled at Ground Zero, but about 3,700 survivors and first responders who had been nearby the World Trade Center site had been diagnosed with cancers linked to the terrorist attack as of August 2015[9].

Marcy Borders was more than a victim of 9/11 to her family and friends; she was Marcy. Despite the hardships she faced, her story serves as a poignant reminder of the human spirit's resilience in the face of unimaginable tragedy.
