'Monica Seles discloses her uncommon health issue during court observation, as she spotted two tennis balls'
Monica Seles, the nine-time Grand Slam champion, has been living with myasthenia gravis (MG), a rare neuromuscular autoimmune disease, for the past three years. The diagnosis came after she experienced symptoms such as double vision and weakness in her arms and legs, which affected her day-to-day life and required her to adapt to a "new normal."
Seles has partnered with the global immunology company, argenx, to raise awareness about MG through their Go for Greater campaign. This collaboration aims to empower people living with MG and increase understanding of the disease.
In an emotional and inspiring move, Seles has decided to share her journey publicly for the first time, ahead of the US Open, which begins on August 24. This decision comes as she seeks to shine a light on a disease that remains little-known to many.
Seles's story is one of resilience and adaptation. Born in Yugoslavia, she moved to the United States as a 13-year-old immigrant who spoke no English. Her career was marked by overcoming adversity, including the infamous stabbing attack at a Hamburg tournament in 1993 that threatened her life and career.
Reflecting on her experiences, Seles tells the kids she mentors, "You've got to always adjust. That ball is bouncing, so you have to adjust." This philosophy has served her well, as she continues to navigate the challenges posed by MG.
Living with MG has been another "hard reset" in Seles's life. Simple tasks like blowing her hair became challenging. The disease affects the voluntary muscles, causing muscle weakness and double vision. It has impacted her day-to-day life, including routine tasks and travel, and posed emotional challenges such as feelings of isolation.
Seles was shocked upon being diagnosed with MG and it took time to absorb and accept this new reality. However, she has since embraced her role as an advocate, using her platform to raise awareness and support for those living with the disease.
Through her partnership with argenx's Go for Greater program, Seles connects with and supports the MG community, encouraging proactive management and raising visibility for this rare disease. Her openness about living with MG serves as a beacon of hope for those facing similar challenges, proving that even legends must learn to adapt - on the court and in life.
