"Men worldwide face the greatest risk of death by suicide. One cyclist embarks on a journey along Britain's coastline, aiming to encourage men to take up cycling and engage in conversations about their mental health"

In an inspiring display of endurance and dedication, Chris Hall embarked on a self-supported bike ride around the perimeter of Britain last Friday from Movember's headquarters in London. The journey, which aims to raise funds and awareness for the men's health charity, is a testament to Chris's resilience and commitment to mental health causes.

Planned over four years, the route for Chris's challenge was meticulously planned. However, he admitted that his knowledge of the roads beyond his home was lacking. Undeterred, Chris took up cycling again when he became an architect in London, using it as a coping mechanism to deal with the stresses of his job and depression.

When growing suicidal thoughts became too much to bear, Chris sought help from Movember, the charity he now rides for. He quit his job and threw himself into this challenging endeavour, determined to make a difference.

Chris's journey across Britain is not just a test of physical endurance, but also a means to create space for conversations about mental health. Other riders are joining him on his journey, sharing part of it with him and adding to the cause.

The route covers key locations like Newcastle, Edinburgh, Fort William, Glasgow, Cardigan, St. David's, and Swansea, following the coastline around Britain’s perimeter. Daily distances are substantial, often exceeding 200 km with significant elevation gains, highlighting the physical and mental endurance needed.

The mental health impact of this ride is emphasized by Chris himself. He frequently mentions feeling "mentally really tired" despite his physical readiness, illustrating the psychological demands of such an undertaking. The ride aims not only to raise funds but also to stimulate conversation about men’s mental health and the importance of awareness and support, consistent with Movember's mission.

Chris's journey is progressing rapidly, with little to stop him once he's on the road. A map is currently tracking his whereabouts, showing a black line wiggling its way around the edge of Britain. Donations can be made to Movember, the charity Chris is cycling for.

Conversations flow easily while cycling next to each other, according to Chris. A new rider joined him and felt comfortable doing so despite initial apprehensions. The cycling club in Kings Lynn has become a supportive space for men to share their worries and concerns. Chris was joined by a local cycling club in Kings Lynn for part of his journey.

Suicide is the biggest global killer of men, and three out of four suicides in the UK are by men. One in five men between 16 and 29 are reported to have had moderate to severe depressive symptoms in 2021. Chris's journey is a powerful reminder of the importance of mental health awareness and the need for support.
