Memorial to the NS Victims of Worpswede to be Erected This Year
A memorial site dedicated to the memory of 20 individuals from Worpswede who were murdered or driven to death during the Nazi era is set to be constructed this year. The memorial site will be established on the grounds of the town hall, and the project is expected to cost approximately 18,000 euros.
The deceased victims were part of the Nazi euthanasia murder program, as well as those murdered due to their convictions. One of the identified victims was the deceased child of a Polish forced laborer.
The memorial site will feature a light grey granite stele, measuring 63 x 190 cm, designed by sculptor and stonemason Jens Spieler from Ottersberg. The stele will bear the first and last names, dates of birth and death, and places of death on bronze cast plates. Additionally, an information stele will be included, providing background information and a short biography of the victims via QR code.
Donations for the realization of the memorial site can be made via the local history association Worpswede's donation account, with the IBAN DE85 2916 6568 0010 1389 03 and the reference "Memorial". Initial donation pledges amounting to 3,700 euros have already been received.
For any questions about the project, please contact Burckhard Rehage via email at [email protected]. As of now, there is no place of remembrance or commemoration for these victims in Worpswede, making this memorial an important step towards acknowledging and honouring their lives.
Up-to-date information on the progress and funding status of the memorial can be found on local Worpswede municipal websites, official German cultural heritage or memorial foundations, or recent news outlets covering regional projects related to Nazi victims.
