Sounding the Alarm: FCT Resident Doctors Prepared for a Three-Day Shutdown
Medical Professionals of the Federal Medical Center (FCT) Express Outrage Over Perceived Unfair Decision - FCT Doctors Initiate Alarming Work Stoppage, Issue Deadline to Wike
The Association of Resident Doctors (ARD) in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja, has announced a three-day work stoppage, effective from Tuesday, May 6. The decision came after an emergency meeting at Asokoro District Hospital, Abuja, where they voiced their displeasure over the unceremonious termination of 127 health workers.
In an informal and straightforward address following the meeting, the president of FCT ARD, Dr. George Ebong, expressed their frustration, referring to the dismissals as excessive, ill-timed, and inhumane. He emphasized the necessity of the affected workers' immediate reinstatement and arrears for their unpaid April salaries.
Ebong also made it clear that he was calling for the resignation of the chairman of FCT-CSC, Emeka Ezeh. If their demands are not met by Minister, Nyesom Wike, and the FCT Administration within the three-day ultimatum, the doctors are prepared to prolong the strike indefinitely.
Ebong's speech was passionate and clear, highlighting the importance of due process and fair treatment in any workplace. "Our colleagues were labeled as ghost workers, ex-employees, and absconders without proper investigation. These professionals are still in the system, working diligently," he said.
The president revealed that the affected health workers' salaries were abruptly withheld without any prior warning, showcasing a clear disregard for their well-being. Consequently, the association demands immediate payment of their April salaries, a written apology, and the resignation of Ezeh.
The hospitals in question would feel the ripple effects of the work stoppage, as three managing directors are among the affected employees. The doctors' association also aims to hold a peaceful protest march to voice their grievances and seek justice.
In addition, the association is encouraging the FCT Administration to swiftly implement the Minister's approval to employ 315 healthcare workers. More details about these employment initiatives should be communicated promptly to the public.
Make sure the hospitals continue to function with minimal disruption, and seek alternative healthcare options if possible during this period.
