Simone Ginsberg: How to Balance Academics, Sleep, and Social Life?

Academics, extracurriculars, and social activities should go hand-in-hand, but achieving a balance can seem challenging, particularly at a rigorous school like Bronx Science. Here's how you can design your unique time management strategy:

  1. Know your schedule.Organize your life by getting to know your schedule. Make use of a calendar - either a physical one handed to you at the start of the year or an online option like Notion, which is free and customizable. List out essential dates, deadlines, and events on your calendar for a straightforward approach to time distribution.
  2. Plan your time ahead.Be meticulous when organizing your time; there's not enough of it to go around. Plan your daily, weekly, or even monthly schedule by taking into account your long-term goals, and remember to always include activities that make you happy!
  3. Know your limits.Take stock of your responsibilities and prioritize your personal wellbeing. If you're overwhelmed, abandon tasks or activities that are too much to handle. Remember, your mental and physical health should always come first.

Tori Wee: Getting to Know Teachers for Letter of Recommendation

To learn more about your teachers and secure a stellar letter of recommendation, consider these suggestions:

  1. Attend small group instruction (SGI) regularly as it's a fantastic opportunity to foster relationships with your teachers.
  2. Active participation in class shows dedication and motivation, leaving a lasting impression on your teacher.
  3. Develop a genuine connection with your teachers - SGI is ideal for taking that first step. A dependable and committed student is one that teachers are more than happy to get to know better!
  4. When considering which teacher to ask for a recommendation, consider their ability to advocate for the type of student you are now as well as their ability to write you a positive and compelling letter. Remember that you'll need two teachers from different departments for your junior year, preferably one in humanities and one in STEM.

Amanda Ro: Setting Boundaries with People

Making and maintaining strong friendships is crucial in high school. However, establishing boundaries is equally essential to protect your well-being.

  1. Avoid asking friends to do things that make them uncomfortable. Maintain a balance between responsible actions that prioritize your own needs and caring for others.
  2. Don't forget to put yourself first. Completing your own work before helping others ensures that you're not stretched too thin or overwhelmed.
  3. Competition among peers is inevitable in such a competitive school environment. Focus on building supportive friendships by celebrating the achievements of others alongside your own.
  4. Privacy is crucial in the tight-knit school community of Bronx Science. Maintaining a veil of privacy allows you to separate your friendships from your academics and prevents constant comparison among peers.

Sophia Birman: Improving Public Speaking Skills

Becoming a confident public speaker can feel intimidating, but mastering it is achievable through practice and preparation.

  1. Practice public speaking in extracurricular activities or daily presentations. Joining groups like Speech and Debate, or the school's annual theatrical performances provides a platform to hone your skills and build confidence.
  2. Know your audience by tailoring your presentation style to their level of knowledge, expectations, and dynamics. Making eye contact, using body language, and incorporating humor can help engage your audience and establish a genuine connection.
  3. Seek feedback and criticism from friends or peers, as their insights can help you achieve a polished final product.

Public Service Announcement: Now, it's time to discuss some serious matters. These are tough topics, and it's vital to remember that we should always prioritize our mental health and well-being. Having a healthy support system and establishing boundaries with peer groups is essential in managing stress and preventing burnout. Reach out to people you trust if you feel overwhelmed, and explore opportunities for stress relief, such as counseling services offered by the school. Don't forget to take care of yourself, Bronx Science students!
