In a recent incident, 621 pilgrims were affected by respiratory issues due to a chlorine leak at a water treatment station on the Karbala-Najaf road during the Arbaeen pilgrimage. The incident occurred on August 10, 2025, and was reported by Al-Rai daily[3].

The majority of those affected were Shiite pilgrims traveling on foot to Karbala to observe the annual Arbaeen rituals commemorating Imam Hussein[1]. The leak occurred at a drinking water treatment plant near Karbala, caused by a technical malfunction[2].

Ambulances and civil defense teams responded immediately and transported the pilgrims to local hospitals[2]. Cases ranged mostly from mild to moderate respiratory problems due to chlorine gas inhalation[2].

The Iraqi Ministry of Health announced that all affected individuals received prompt medical treatment and were discharged in good health[4]. The road where the incident occurred is between Karbala and Najaf.

This incident underscores ongoing challenges with infrastructure safety in Iraq amid large-scale pilgrimages[1][2]. Iraqi authorities have highlighted infrastructure disrepair and lax safety standards as contributing factors in such incidents[1]. No fatalities have been reported, and the situation appears stabilized following prompt medical intervention.

No new information about the cause of the leak, the number of affected individuals, or the victims' health status beyond their discharge from the hospital was provided[5]. Similarly, no new information about the reporting of the incident by Al-Rai daily or the confirmation by the Ministry of Health was provided[6]. Additionally, no new information about the treatment received by the affected individuals or the discharge of the affected individuals from the hospital was provided[7].
