Local Student Raises $20k for 5 AEDs in Maynard

A local high school student, Siene Hesbach, has raised around $20,000 to provide her town with five automated external defibrillators (AEDs). The initiative aims to improve safety at athletic fields and was supported by the Maynard Fire Department.

Hesbach, a senior at a Massachusetts high school, noticed the lack of publicly accessible AEDs near athletic fields in Maynard. She decided to take action and raised funds for the project, which will benefit both students and the wider community. The AEDs, provided by Chelmsford company Zoll, offer user instructions in case of an emergency. The Maynard Fire Department, led by Chief Angela Lawless, will maintain the devices. The AEDs have been strategically installed at Alumni Track, Fowler Field, Rockland Field, Ice House Landing, and Memorial Park. This move is particularly important as sudden cardiac arrest is the leading cause of death in student athletes, according to the National Library of Medicine. Previously, Maynard schools had only one portable AED, despite having multiple athletic fields minutes apart.

Thanks to Siene Hesbach's initiative, Maynard now has five AEDs located at key athletic fields. This investment in safety will help protect student athletes and the wider community in case of emergencies. The Maynard Fire Department's support ensures the AEDs will be well-maintained, further enhancing their effectiveness.
