Law Enforcement Departments to Launch Drug Control Week on upcoming Saturday, Marking National Road Safety Day
Lower Saxony Police to Enhance Traffic Safety Measures for Summer 2024
As the summer season approaches, the Lower Saxony Police has announced a series of initiatives aimed at ensuring road safety. While specific details about the 2024 summer campaign have yet to be officially announced, historical data suggests that the focus will be on speed enforcement, driving competence, and alcohol/drug control.
Typically, German police forces emphasize increased speed enforcement using mobile and stationary radar controls, random and targeted checks for driving competence including proper licensing and vehicle roadworthiness, and alcohol and drug roadside screenings, particularly during weekends and holidays. Awareness campaigns promoting safe driving behaviour during the high-travel summer months are also a common feature of such campaigns.
In the lead-up to summer 2024, some specific measures have been disclosed. For instance, a control week against alcohol and drugs at the wheel is scheduled to take place from 17th to 23rd June in the Osnabrück Police Directorate's area and beyond. Additionally, weighing facilities and technical controls for motorhomes will be offered in the Emsland in view of the upcoming summer holidays.
The Lower Saxony Police remains firm in its stance that "Drugs have no place at the wheel," regardless of any potential changes in cannabis legislation. The police force has been organising a state-wide Traffic Safety Day annually for over ten years, with this year's event scheduled for 15th June.
Marco Ellermann, spokesperson for the Osnabrück Police Directorate, emphasises the importance of adapting speed and driving competence for road safety. The Osnabrück Police will be present at various events across the state, including an event on the Domplatz with other traffic partners, an information stand at the city festival in Leer, and an information stand in Aurich on the market square.
Actions will take place in locations ranging from the Teutoburg Forest to the East Frisian Islands, with the event including numerous actions across the state. Control measures will also be implemented during these events. The focus topics will be addressed in the digital world across the state under the hashtags #more trafficsafety and #driveclear.
As the summer season approaches, everyone is encouraged to contribute to arriving at their destination safely. The Aurich/Wittmund police inspection will visit schools more frequently, and a mobility training will take place in Aurich. Last year, 2,404 offenses related to driving under the influence of cannabis or medication were recorded by the police.
For the most accurate and up-to-date information regarding traffic safety campaigns for summer 2024, it is best to check official Lower Saxony Police or Ministry of Interior press releases or their traffic safety web pages closer to or during that period, as these initiatives are often published seasonally and regionally.

In an effort to secure road safety during the summer season, the Lower Saxony Police might extend their initiatives to include health-and-wellness aspects such as promoting fitness-and-exercise Alongside the usual focus on speed control, driving competence, and alcohol/drug control. Such a move could perhaps involve campaigns advocating for healthy travel habits, perhaps even collaborations with entities like Daimler and Blicki e.V. to promote road safety training for children.
Juxtaposed to their strong stance on traffic safety, the Lower Saxony Police could also emphasize the importance of maintaining physical health while driving, thus incorporating elements of science, such as ergonomic studies, to design seats and controls in a way that optimizes driver comfort and minimizes strain on the body during long drives, contributing to the overall wellness of drivers on the road.
