Launching MIT HEALS: a pioneering life sciences project tackling significant health issues

A fresh initiative called MIT HEALS (Health and Life Sciences Collaborative) is bringing together the best and brightest minds to tackle these issues, using MIT's strengths in AI, life sciences, and engineering to shape the future of medicine.

Sally Kornbluth, MIT's President, couldn't be more excited: "As a melting pot of knowledge, tools, and cures, there's no place like MIT. Our goal with MIT HEALS? Inspire, speed up, and deliver solutions, at scale, to some of the most pressing health challenges society is facing."

Maura Healey, Massachusetts' Governor, was impressed: "MIT's leadership and the work you do are more important than ever. With MIT HEALS, you're forging a new commitment to improving human life."

A history of impact

MIT's been a trailblazer in the life sciences for half a century. In 1970, MIT's Center for Cancer Research was born under the guidance of Salvador Luria, a renowned molecular biologist who eventually won a Nobel Prize. Over the years, this center has been at the forefront of research that revolutionized molecular biology and recombinant DNA technology, leading to significant advances in human health.

Recent visiting committees found potential for even more growth in collaborations, especially interdisciplinary ones. MIT has always been ahead of the curve in collaborative research, but Nergis Mavalvala, dean of MIT's School of Science, believes there's room for improvement: "There's an enormous hunger among our colleagues to collaborate more, and MIT HEALS aims to make that happen."

A bottom-up process

Graduate fellowships, collaborative research programs with local hospitals, and new facilities like the Hood Pediatric Innovation Hub will help researchers tackle the challenges that lie ahead.
