Kentucky's Department of Public Health designates Dr. John Langefeld to take on the position of the commissioner of public health, effective July 1.

New Commissioner of Public Health Announced in Kentucky

Dr. John Langefeld has been appointed as the new Commissioner of Public Health for the Kentucky Department for Public Health (KDPH). With over three decades of health care leadership experience, Dr. Langefeld brings a wealth of knowledge and expertise to this role.

Born and raised in Kentucky, Dr. Langefeld earned his medical degree from the University of Louisville School of Medicine. He has spent his career serving the people of Kentucky, most recently as the medical director for health insights and innovation at the Cabinet for Health and Family Services (CHFS).

In the past, Dr. Langefeld served as the Chief Medical Officer for the Kentucky Department for Medicaid Services. He has also led Kentucky's Health Quality Initiative and was a keynote speaker at the 10th Annual Kentucky Rural Telehealth Summit, demonstrating his commitment to advancing public health initiatives and telehealth, particularly in rural settings.

Governor Andy Beshear praised Dr. Langefeld's experience in clinical care, health care policy, and Medicaid services, stating that he is confident in Dr. Langefeld's ability to lead KDPH. Dr. Langefeld will take over as commissioner on July 1.

As Commissioner of Public Health, Dr. Langefeld's focus will be on shifting the focus from treating illness to nurturing health and well-being. His plans include enhancing social supports, expanding mental health resources, prioritizing preventive screenings, and implementing innovative, data-driven strategies.

KDPH's mission is to improve the health and safety of people in Kentucky through prevention of negative health outcomes, promotion of healthy lifestyles, and protection from diseases, injury, and environmental health impacts. Dr. Langefeld's leadership will be instrumental in achieving these goals.

In his spare time, Dr. Langefeld enjoys traveling and spending quality time with friends and family, including his five children, one grandchild, and a Bichon.

As Dr. Langefeld takes over as Commissioner of Public Health, Dr. Steven Stack is transitioning to the role of Secretary of the Kentucky Cabinet for Health and Family Services.
