Headline: Investigation Continues into Alleged Black-Market Euthanasia Ring on Gold Coast
Subhead: Brett Daniel Taylor, Elaine Arch-Rowe, and an unnamed 80-year-old man face charges in connection with the case.
In a series of court appearances, Brett Daniel Taylor, Elaine Arch-Rowe, and an unnamed 80-year-old man have been charged in relation to an alleged black-market euthanasia ring on the Gold Coast.
The investigation, which began after the death of 43-year-old quadriplegic David Llewellyn Bedford, has revealed that a charity was used to sell pentobarbital, a drug normally used to euthanize animals, to vulnerable people.
On Thursday, Brett Daniel Taylor did not appear in Southport Magistrates Court. Taylor is charged with aiding suicide over Bedford's death and is also accused of running a fake whale euthanasia charity. He is due back in court on October 7.
Meanwhile, Elaine Arch-Rowe faced court on Tuesday. Police allege Arch-Rowe brought life-ending veterinary drugs to an RSL seminar to sell them. Arch-Rowe is accused of trying to supply the lethal drug to an undercover police officer and faces a second count relating to an alleged aiding in a suicide involving an undercover officer. Arch-Rowe is due to return to court on October 17.
The unnamed 80-year-old man, who has been charged with trafficking and possessing dangerous drugs, is due in court on September 26.
During a videoconference, Arch-Rowe allegedly said, "to get access to the product from the manufacturer we need to give a large percentage to be used legitimately." Magistrate Deborah Mitchell heard police intercepted communications with Arch-Rowe discussing with Taylor how to obtain two types of fatal drug.
No bail was applied for during the court mention, and an adjournment was asked for. No comment was made by Taylor's lawyer as he left court. Arch-Rowe was released from a Gold Coast watchhouse after being granted bail despite the prosecution's opposition.
At this time, there are no additional publicly named persons charged in the investigation related to the suspected black market for euthanasia beyond Brett Daniel Taylor, Elaine Arch-Rowe, and Brett Taylor's 80-year-old father. No further suspects are mentioned.
Approximately 20 other deaths are being investigated in connection with the case. The investigation is ongoing, and more details are expected to be released as the case progresses.
