A hefty pollen load is defined as 50 pollen per cubic meter of air. But currently, there are frequently over 100 pollen per cubic meter in the region, as Werchan elucidates. The simultaneous blooming of numerous grasses shapes the high pollen loads.
Windy spells have spread pollen far and wide
Thanks to the gusty weather, pollen has been carried across the cityscape. Even the urban center of Berlin has been infiltrated by pollen, as reported by the landscape ecologist. "You can feel it everywhere in the city," she says.
Interestingly, the urban areas within Berlin have more blooming grass zones these days due to less mowing, focusing on conserving insect populations. Conversely, Brandenburg is home to vast swathes of rye, yet most of them have already withered, contributing minimally to the grass pollen load.
Don't freak out about the fluffy white stuff
The white, cottony fluff that's currently floating around and littering the ground isn't pollen—it's poplar seeds, also known as poplar cotton. Rest assured, this fluff won't trigger any allergies.
What about the pollen load over Pentecost weekend? "During the Pentecost weekend, the weather will be changeable and cool, offering some respite for allergy sufferers," states Werchan. Cool temperatures slow down grass growth, and rain helps wash pollen out of the atmosphere—two factors that bring temporary relief to the allergy-stricken.
