IKEA provides kitchen amenities to local housing project
In a heartwarming gesture, IKEA Lübeck recently donated a state-of-the-art kitchen to Diakonie Nord Nord Ost, a residential group in Bad Schwartau that provides a home for nine individuals aged between 21 and 35 living with Prader-Willi syndrome. The kitchen, worth 10,000 euros, was meticulously planned and installed within a week, transforming the central hub of the residential group.
The planning process was overseen by Till Maass, a kitchen expert, who ensured that the new kitchen catered to the specific needs of the residents. Julia Hoffmann, the Local Community & Engagement Leader at IKEA Lübeck, spearheaded the donation, reflecting the company's commitment to improving the lives of those in the community.
The old kitchen, which had limited possibilities for storing prepared food, insufficient storage space, and a cluttered worktop, has been replaced with a spacious and functional space. The new kitchen boasts two large refrigerators and a built-in microwave, providing ample storage and making meal preparation more efficient.
The kitchen's design focuses on ease of use, durability, and safety, key considerations when catering to individuals with Prader-Willi syndrome. Smooth surfaces, easy-to-clean appliances, water-resistant flooring, and secure storage are just a few of the features that have been incorporated to make the kitchen accessible and user-friendly.
Other features include simple controls, automatic shut-off, and quiet operation, all aimed at reducing confusion and sensory overload. Safety measures such as secure latches on ovens and stoves, and visual aids like charts or pictures to help residents follow recipes or cooking steps, have also been implemented.
The official handover of the donation took place on May 17, 2023, in Bad Schwartau. Mrs. Alexandra Thiemann, the head of the residential group, expressed her gratitude for the generous donation, stating that the new kitchen would greatly improve the quality of life for the residents.
Diakonie Nord Nord Ost extends its heartfelt thanks to IKEA Lübeck for their generous donation and for their commitment to making a difference in the lives of those living with Prader-Willi syndrome. The new kitchen is a testament to the power of collaboration and community spirit, demonstrating that with the right support, individuals with Prader-Willi syndrome can lead fulfilling and independent lives.
