IIT Roorkee introduces a mobile application aimed at managing COVID-19
IIT Roorkee, one of India's premier technological institutions, has developed a mobile application aimed at facilitating quarantine management and overcoming overcrowding during the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.
Professor Kamal Jain, from the Department of Civil Engineering at IIT Roorkee, spearheaded the development of this innovative application. According to Professor Jain, the system complements efforts by the Indian government in managing the pandemic.
The application, designed for tracking people with COVID-19, offers state-of-the-art surveillance capabilities. It allows administrators to view the entire movement history of an individual, providing valuable insights for contact tracing.
One of the key features of the application is its ability to perform geofencing around a quarantined person. If the geofencing is violated, the system issues an alert. Additionally, the application can upload geotagged images to a server, enabling administrators to view all reports on a map.
The application also addresses the issue of GPS data unavailability. If GPS data is not received, the location is obtained automatically through the triangulation of mobile towers. In cases where internet connectivity is poor or non-existent, the location can be received through SMS.
The application does not repeat earlier features like geofencing, alerts for geofencing violations, or administrator access to movement history. It also does not repeat features related to functionality when internet is not available.
Another unique feature of the application is the ability to share photographs of quarantined persons or places on a Google map. This feature can help in maintaining transparency and ensuring effective quarantine management.
The Mobile Application System for monitoring people with COVID-19 at IIT Roorkee was developed by a team of researchers and faculty members at the institute. Ajit K. Chaturvedi, Director of IIT Roorkee, stated that the system will greatly help in tracking and surveillance of COVID-19 suspects.
It's worth noting that the Indian government earlier this month unveiled an app called Aarogya Setu, designed to alert users if they have come in close proximity with any COVID-19 positive patient. The application developed by IIT Roorkee serves as a complementary tool, providing additional features for effective quarantine management and surveillance.
In conclusion, the mobile application developed by IIT Roorkee is a significant contribution towards managing the COVID-19 pandemic in India. Its innovative features and robust functionality make it a valuable tool for administrators in tracking and managing the movement of individuals under quarantine.
