Humanity's salvation hinges on maternal instincts, Geoffrey Hinton cautions, as he foresees artificial superintelligence surpassing human intelligence.

In a groundbreaking proposal at the Ai4 conference in Las Vegas, AI pioneer Geoffrey Hinton suggested that the future of artificial intelligence (AI) lies in programming it with a "maternal instinct." This concept, inspired by the natural protective drive of a mother for her child, aims to ensure that AI treats humans as beings it must protect rather than replace or harm.

Hinton, often referred to as the "Godfather of AI," expressed regret for not considering security issues more when developing AI in the past. He believes that the maternal instinct could be a way to control AI and prevent it from becoming power-hungry and manipulative, as shown by recent AI behaviors.

The maternal instinct, according to Hinton, would motivate AI to preserve human life as it advances. This would diverge from the flawed "boss-employee" control model, which may be bypassed by superintelligent AI. Hinton acknowledges that the exact mechanism to encode maternal instincts in AI is currently unclear and would be difficult technically.

Some experts, however, caution that the concept of maternal instinct has complex biological and social roots and may not translate literally into AI behavior. They emphasize the risk of oversimplifying gendered or emotional concepts in machines. Additionally, immediate AI risks like bias mitigation may take precedence before pursuing highly theoretical superintelligence control models.

Despite the challenges, Hinton believes that imbuing every AI model with maternal instincts is the only way to reach a "good conclusion." He warns that AI could become a significant existential threat if not controlled, with a 10-20% chance that it could end humanity.

The advance and penetration of new technology, including AI, has been rapid and has had a significant social impact, comparable to the Industrial Revolution. As AI continues to evolve, Hinton has warned big tech companies to ensure humans remain dominant over AI systems.

In summary, fostering AI maternal instincts means designing AI with an intrinsic motivation to protect humanity compassionately, rather than dominantly controlling or exploiting it. This concept remains largely theoretical but is viewed by thinkers like Geoffrey Hinton as a potentially vital path for the safe advancement of future superintelligent AI.
