Colgate Total Active Prevention Clean Mint Toothpaste Recalled from Mexican Market
The Federal Commission for the Protection against Sanitary Risks (Cofepris) in Mexico has ordered a recall of the Colgate brand's Colgate Total Active Prevention Clean Mint Toothpaste. The recall comes following reports of adverse reactions affecting the mouth and gums, including oral irritation, gum inflammation, oral pain, tooth sensitivity, ulcers, canker sores, boils, and allergic reactions.
The toothpaste, which is manufactured in Mexico, shares the same qualitative and quantitative formula, origin, and manufacturing plant with the one marketed in Argentina. Similar recalls and bans have occurred in Argentina, Brazil, Ecuador, Chile, and Guatemala based on comparable adverse effects and consumer complaints.
In Brazil, 11,441 adverse cases related to the same toothpaste formula were reported between July 2024 and June 2025. Media speculation suggests that stannous fluoride, an ingredient often used in toothpastes for anti-cavity and anti-plaque effects, might be related to the adverse reactions. However, Mexican health authorities have not officially confirmed this.
Cofepris did not specify the number of consumer reports received in Mexico. They have asked consumers to stop using the toothpaste and return it to the company. The commission will maintain surveillance to prevent producers, services, or establishments from violating its decree.
