Hastings Center Launches AI Ethics Tool for Healthcare Policymakers

The Hastings Center for Bioethics has launched an interactive tool, 'Patient's Journey with Medical AI', to help navigate the ethical questions surrounding AI in healthcare. Supported by The Greenwall Foundation, The Donaghue Foundation, and the NIH's Bridge2AI initiative, the tool aims to provide expert guidance to policymakers and industry leaders.

The tool, part of Hastings on the Hill, guides users through five interactions with medical AI, offering personalized insights into how algorithms might influence care. Each decision point presents a summary of ethical issues and multiple-choice questions to stimulate discussion.

Erin Williams, President and CEO of EDW Wisdom, LLC, a consultancy focused on ethical considerations in medical AI development, has been instrumental in its creation. The Hastings Center emphasizes that ethics should not be an afterthought in AI development, highlighting concerns about biased health algorithms and opaque clinical decision tools. The tool is designed to ensure that human dignity, equity, and trust are maintained alongside technological progress.

The Hastings Center invites policymakers, industry leaders, and others to contact them with questions related to ethical issues they encounter in medical AI policy and practice. The 'Patient's Journey with Medical AI' tool is a valuable resource for understanding and addressing these issues, fostering informed decision-making and ensuring that AI serves the public good.
