Google Explores Hypertension Screening for Pixel Watch

Google is exploring new health features for the Pixel Watch, with a focus on hypertension screening. The tech giant is currently testing this functionality through an update to the Fitbit app, aiming to make the Pixel Watch a significant player in digital health.

The hypertension test, unlike Apple's FDA-approved feature on the Apple Watch, is not developed by Google itself. Instead, it's part of the Fitbit Hypertension Study, which collects sensor data and user input to test hypertension detection. Selected users are participating in an extended monitoring trial, receiving around $50 for their involvement.

The Pixel Watch may flag elevated blood pressure levels, similar to Apple's approach, but it won't provide exact numbers. Users should note that this feature may increase battery drain during active data collection. Google has previously rolled out loss of pulse detection in the U.S. after FDA clearance, indicating a commitment to health-related features.

The success of the hypertension screening feature on the Pixel Watch depends on the outcome of the ongoing study. Google's ambition is clear: to expand the Pixel Watch's health capabilities and solidify its position in the digital health market. Users can expect more health-focused updates in the future, with the potential for the Pixel Watch to become a serious contender in this realm.
