Laying It All Out: Sleep Cycle's Global Sleep Report Reveals Shocking Trends

Get a load of this, folks! Sleep Cycle, the world's leading sleep technology company, has dropped a bombshell with their latest report, Sleep Around the World 2025. It's a jaw-dropper, shedding light on the decline in global sleep quality and the crazy trends that dominate our nighttimes.

During this year's Sleep Awareness Month, Sleep Cycle dug deep into over a million global users, backing up their findings from over 105 million sleeps over the past two years – 60 million of that from 2024 alone. This makes Sleep Cycle's data one of the most robust sources for sleep statistics out there.

The report boasts an in-depth look at key sleep metrics, including sleep quality, wake-up mood, bedtimes, and self-reported journaling categories like stress, workouts, and alcohol consumption.

Dr. Michael Gradisar, Head of Sleep Science at Sleep Cycle, had this to say: "To really understand the big picture of sleep health, we gotta tap into some serious, diverse data. With a million active users dishing out their real-world sleep numbers, this report has given us some surprising insights into global sleep patterns. We've spotted trends that might otherwise go unnoticed, like differences in sleep quality and the rise and fall of viral sleep hacks."

Sleep Cycle's report also throws some light on how major global events like the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris and the 2024 Presidential Election have disrupted sleep patterns around the globe, emphasizing the interconnectedness of societal events and personal well-being.

Here are the top findings from the report:

  1. The Global Decline: The average sleep quality dipped from 74.26 percent in 2023 to 73.92 percent (a 0.46 percent decrease) in 2024 – yikes!
  2. The Netherlands, Still on Top: With an average 79.01 percent sleep quality score, the Dutch remain the sleep champs for the second year running. Early bedtimes, a balanced lifestyle, and consistent sleep schedules may be factors to thank for their continued success.
  3. Japan's Sleep Nightmare: The land of the rising sun reported the lowest sleep quality, with a score of just 67.39 percent. High stress, long working hours, and low average sleep durations could be contributing factors.
  4. Women Rule Zzzz's: Women average 76.76 percent for sleep quality compared to men's 74.37 percent. Going to bed earlier and waking up later might be the secret sauce.
  5. Mood Improves with Age: Morning mood improves with age. Although younger people have the best sleep quality, it's the seniors (65+) that wake up happier (65.67 percent compared to 57.18 percent in the 35-44 age group).
  6. Mexico, the Happiest] Wake-Up: For the second year running, Mexico boasts the top "happy wake-up mood" at 73.26 percent, hinting at a possible link between Mexican lifestyles and a brighter start to the day.
  7. Olympic Spirits: In countries like Thailand, a surge in medals during the Olympics paralleled a 1.63 percent boost in happy wake-up moods, implying even small victories can uplift collective spirits overnight.

Erik Jivmark, CEO of Sleep Cycle, added, "This report highlights the power of Sleep Cycle's data and reaffirms our leadership in sleep analysis. The insights help users improve their sleep and demonstrate our broad capabilities to partners."
