Fresh Leadership Positions Look to Capitalize on the Surge in Hematology and Oncology Progress
Golisano Children’s Hospital has announced the appointment of Drs. Jamie Flerlage and Jeffrey Andolina as the new leaders in Pediatric Hematology/Oncology. These esteemed doctors bring a wealth of clinical and research experience to the hospital, further strengthening its commitment to providing expert care and innovative treatment for children with blood disorders and cancers.
Dr. Jamie Flerlage, a pediatric hematologist/oncologist, is renowned for her extensive experience in childhood cancers and blood diseases. She is known for her patient-centered care and collaborative research aimed at improving outcomes for young patients. In her new roles, she will serve as the division chief and academic director of the Division of Pediatric Hematology/Oncology, as well as an assistant director of Clinical Research within Wilmot Cancer Institute’s Clinical Trials Office (CTO). Dr. Flerlage will also lead national and international groups focused on research and clinical trials for Hodgkin’s lymphoma and work to expand external and collaborative clinical research opportunities in Rochester and beyond.
Dr. Flerlage comes to Golisano Children’s Hospital and Wilmot from St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, where she trained in pediatric hematology/oncology before becoming a faculty member. She is nationally and internationally known for her expertise in pediatric Hodgkin’s lymphoma.
Dr. Jeffrey Andolina, likewise an established expert in pediatric hematology/oncology, will direct inpatient and outpatient clinical services for the division, lead clinical program development, and promote a unified approach to the medical care of pediatric hematology/oncology patients. He is an extremely well-respected clinician and leader with expertise in the treatment and care of children with leukemia and lymphoma, as well as other cancers and blood diseases. Dr. Andolina has been named clinical director of Pediatric Hematology and Oncology and associate chair for Pediatric Program Development for Golisano Children’s Hospital.
The division of Pediatric Hematology/Oncology at Golisano Children’s Hospital was nationally ranked in 2023 by U.S. News & World Report. With the addition of Drs. Flerlage and Andolina, the hospital looks forward to continuing its progress in the clinical mission and developing advanced treatments to serve children in New York State and beyond.
Dr. Jonathan W. Friedberg, MD, MMSc, director of Wilmot Cancer Institute, expressed his excitement about having Dr. Flerlage in Rochester, stating that it would be a tremendous asset for clinical research efforts, particularly for childhood cancers. Dr. Jill Halterman, MD, MPH, interim chair of the Department of Pediatrics, also stated that Drs. Andolina and Flerlage offer both the clinical and research expertise to build on the Division's national reputation for providing the highest quality of care.
Together, Drs. Flerlage and Andolina are spearheading new initiatives at Golisano Children’s Hospital to elevate the quality of care, expand research opportunities, and support families navigating difficult diagnoses. Their combined expertise promises to further strengthen the hospital’s position as a leader in pediatric hematology/oncology. Dr. Flerlage will commence her new roles on October 1.
