Acclaimed filmmaker Francis Ford Coppola, best known for his work on The Godfather movies and Apocalypse Now, recently underwent a scheduled cardiac procedure in Rome, Italy. According to Coppola's US-based representative, the director is doing well and resting comfortably with no complications.
The procedure, a non-emergency update for Coppola's atrial fibrillation (a-fib) treatment from over three decades ago, was performed by Dr. Andrea Natale, Coppola's long-time doctor and the inventor of the afib procedure. Coppola's representative disputed a report that the director had atrial fibrillation before the scheduled procedure.
The procedure took place at Policlinico Tor Vergata, a public hospital in Rome. Coppola arrived at the hospital by car and there was no emergency involved. Coppola himself reassured fans via Instagram, posting a photograph of himself appearing relaxed and smiling, with the caption confirming that he is fine and well.
In his post, Coppola also mentioned that he was in Rome for an update of his 30-year-old a-fib procedure with Dr. Natale. Coppola's latest movie, Megalopolis, a self-funded sci-fi epic about transforming a fictional future New York City into a utopian community, had its debut at the Cannes Film Festival in 2024, but received mixed reviews and struggled at the box office. However, Coppola's Instagram post did not indicate that the medical procedure was related to the promotion of Megalopolis.
Throughout his illustrious career, Coppola has won five Academy Awards, four of which were for his work on the first two films in The Godfather trilogy. The Godfather trilogy is widely considered by cinema buffs to rank among the greatest movies of all time. The hospital did not immediately respond to a request for comment regarding Coppola's condition.
