In British Columbia, a concerning trend has emerged in the healthcare system: an increasing number of patients are leaving emergency rooms (ERs) without receiving treatment. According to data from the opposition, this is due to severe overcrowding and long wait times, leading to a dramatic rise in patients leaving before being seen.

Between 2018 and 2025, the number of patients leaving ERs without treatment increased by 86 percent province-wide, reaching nearly 142,000 in the last year alone. Regions like Vancouver Island Health Authority saw a 160 percent increase in such cases over seven years, and Fraser Health Authority experienced an 87 percent rise.

Extended wait times and capacity issues, staff shortages, and healthcare system strain are key contributing factors. Overwhelmed ERs mean some patients leave due to frustration or their condition improving while waiting. The province has ongoing shortages of doctors and healthcare workers, impacting ER capacity and timely care delivery. Increased demand and limited resources in acute care have made it difficult to match patient needs promptly.

The B.C. Ministry of Health acknowledges the problem and has started efforts to recruit more doctors and healthcare workers from other countries while improving working conditions and credential recognition to help stabilize emergency and primary care services.

Elsewhere, news from across Canada includes a fatal helicopter crash investigation in the southern interior, a nationwide shortage of prescription painkillers, a decline in new car sales due to the trade war, seniors rarely downsizing posing a challenge for first-time homebuyers, and a rescue operation underway for three trapped miners in northern B.C. following a cave-in. In a separate development, a high-profile sex assault case involving five former Hockey Canada players ended with all of them being acquitted.
