Enhancing Mental Well-being Through Gardening
In a recent study conducted by YouGov on behalf of STIGA, a world-leading manufacturer of garden care equipment, the "Gardens of Europe 2025" survey sheds light on the mental health benefits of gardening across Europe, including Germany.
The survey, which involved 5,054 participants from Italy, Spain, Germany, Poland, and the UK, reveals that tending to green spaces provides significant emotional and psychological well-being advantages, serving as a source of relaxation, stress relief, and improved mood.
For Germany, the findings underline how gardening contributes to mental wellness by fostering a connection with nature, encouraging mindfulness, and offering a fulfilling, productive activity that combats feelings of isolation and anxiety. This aligns with broader European trends identified in the study, where gardening is increasingly embraced as a meaningful way to support mental health.
According to the survey, 73% of Europeans consider green spaces a feel-good place. In Germany, 76% of respondents agree that time spent outdoors is a significant advantage of gardening. The survey also indicates that gardening is no longer perceived as purely agricultural or decorative, but has evolved into a regenerative activity for the mind that can restore a sense of balance.
Germans (72%) and Britons (78%) find spending time outdoors and contact with nature to be the main benefits of gardening. Caring for a green space encourages 41% of Germans surveyed to move more regularly, contributing to both mental and physical well-being. Moreover, gardening leads to stress relief and improved mood for 42% of Germans surveyed.
The survey results suggest that gardening has a positive psychological impact on the mental health of a majority of Europeans. STIGA, a company that offers tools that connect people with nature and improve the quality of life outdoors, supports garden enthusiasts in strengthening their mental well-being in the green.
Fabio Banin, a STIGA garden expert, provides seven tips for transforming a garden into a wellness oasis. These include creating cozy retreats using garden furniture, cushions, or a hammock; designing a special corner for yoga or meditation; using automatic garden helpers like the STIGA A-series robotic lawn mowers for more tranquility; planting scented plants like lavender, jasmine, and chamomile for a relaxing atmosphere; creating living spaces for bees, butterflies, and hedgehogs by planting nectar-rich flowers; and ensuring privacy through natural barriers like taller shrubs or an attractive hedge using STIGA hedge trimmers or the Multi-Tool.
STIGA's Managing Director Germany and Switzerland, Marc Gerster, states that the company's engineers combine advanced technical skills with a deep passion for nature and the garden. The company, which has been offering high-quality garden tools, machines, and equipment throughout Europe for over 90 years and sells more than one million devices annually, is committed to finding innovative solutions and developing new patents, such as the patented STIGA E-Power technology.
