Speaking Truth to Power: Commissioner for SED's Crusade for Victims of Injustice

Exhibit Empathy Towards Sufferers of Injustice: Let's display suitable compassion towards wrongdoing casualties. - Enhanced Investigations Demand: Prioritizing Support for Victims of Unfair Treatment

Peter Wurschi, Thuringia's Commissioner for confronting the Authoritarian SED Regime, takes aim at the less-than-adequate attention given to victims of SED oppression. According to Wurschi, these victims are still grappling with long-term effects that doctors, authorities, and even nursing homes disregard.

An concluding event for the research project "Health Conseqeunces of SED Tyranny for Victims" takes place this Wednesday. Attendance from the medical, therapy, political, and administrative spheres - as well as victim advocacy groups - is expected. Wurschi stresses that there exists a "knowledge void" when it comes to working with individuals traumatized by such authoritarian actions, and that these issues stem from their personal histories, rather than being personal shortcomings.

New legislation streamlines claims for support

Researchers at the universities of Jena, Leipzig, Magdeburg, and Rostock, in a consortium spanning a four-year-long investigation, have uncovered scientific evidence concerning the health status of SED victims of oppression. Findings from this research have been incorporated into a revision of SED compensation laws, slated for September 2024. Victims of SED tyranny will now find it easier to claim support or rehabilitation, according to psychologist Professor Bernhard Strauß, the research consortium's spokesperson. Previously, a rigorous proof of an immediate, direct connection to their suffering was required, an almost impossible feat in practice, says Strauß.

Comparative studies point to higher susceptibility to illness among victims

Comparative studies with victims of Stasi repression measures and DDR-socialized individuals not subject to such repression revealed biological differences, asserts Strauß. For instance, victims have significantly elevated inflammation parameters, suggesting higher susceptibility to physical ailments. Moving forward, individuals demonstrably impacted by SED injustice will receive support if their illness aligns with patterns prevalent among victims of injustice.

Research estimates up to 25,000 victims of doping in sports

A catalog of criteria is now being developed, in collaboration with entities like the Federal Ministry of Justice and the Federal Ministry for Social Affairs, using an expert committee. Current estimates position the number of DDR-era doping victims in both elite and recreational sports at up to 25,000. The number of individuals affected by repression is more challenging to determine but is likely six figures, according to the research.

Wurschi sees the research findings as overdue validation for many victims. "To know that science has finally acknowledged the causal link between their ongoing struggles, related to the repression they endured during the DDR era, is a profound source of satisfaction," says Wurschi.
