In a shocking turn of events, a palliative care doctor in Berlin is standing trial for the alleged murder of at least 15 patients. The investigation, which began some time ago, is still ongoing, with the Berlin public prosecutor's office examining an additional 72 cases, bringing the total number of cases under investigation to 87.

The trial commenced on July 23, 2025, and the doctor is accused of murder with malice aforethought. The prosecution seeks a conviction, a determination of his guilt as particularly serious, preventive detention, a lifelong ban from practicing medicine, and for this case to be considered one of the most significant nationwide.

The prosecution alleges that the doctor visited victims unannounced and when they were alone. He is also accused of administering sedatives and muscle relaxants to a 56-year-old woman without medical necessity. Moreover, the prosecution claims that the doctor set fires to cover up his actions.

However, autopsies have revealed that the victims did not die as a result of the fires. The potential number of individuals to be heard in the trial is around 150. The court has scheduled 35 trial dates up to January 28, 2026, with multiple witnesses for each case.

In a recent development, the doctor reportedly called the woman's daughter to apologise for violating her advance directive. The doctor is also alleged to have worked for two nursing services in Berlin.

As the trial unfolds, the public and the medical community await the verdict, hoping for justice for the victims and their families. The case is being closely watched across Germany and beyond, as it raises serious questions about the ethics and practices within the healthcare system.
