Dental institution Manav Rachna College and the Indian Dental Association initiate a first-of-its-kind Fellowship program in Sports Dentistry within North India.
Manav Rachna Dental College (MRDC), in collaboration with the Indian Dental Association (IDA), has launched the first-ever specialised program in North India - the Fellowship in Sports Dentistry. This innovative initiative integrates oral healthcare with sports medicine, aiming to provide advanced training in sports dentistry.
The program focuses on preventing and managing sports-related oral injuries, promoting overall oral health among athletes. By formally recognising and addressing the unique dental needs of athletes, the fellowship contributes significantly to the field of sports medicine in India, enhancing the quality of care in sports-related oral health.
The Fellowship in Sports Dentistry addresses a gap in the field of sports dentistry in India, particularly in structured academic and preventive formats. Consistently ranked among the top in India, MRDC's achievements reflect its commitment to quality education.
The surge of organized and competitive sports across India has led to an increase in dental and facial injuries among athletes. Recognising this, the program offers training in first-response dental care, importance of custom mouthguards, injury reporting protocols, and oral hygiene maintenance for athletes.
The Krida Dant Suraksha Volunteer Training, a youth-focused outreach component of the Sports Dentistry Fellowship, aims to create oral health ambassadors in sports communities.
Dr. Puneet Batra, Pro Vice Chancellor of Health Sciences and Dean of the School of Dental Sciences and School of Allied Health Sciences at MRIIRS, emphasised the importance of oral health in sports performance and injury prevention. Prof. Dr. Sanjay Srivastava, Vice Chancellor of Manav Rachna International Institute of Research and Studies, noted that the initiative reflects the commitment to building bridges between health sciences and societal well-being.
Dr. Amit Bhalla, Vice President of Manav Rachna Educational Institutions, stated that the oral health of athletes is a priority and the initiative reflects the institution's vision to blend academic excellence with community impact.
As India positions itself as a global sporting hub, the need for holistic athlete care, including oral health, is increasingly important. The event witnessed participation from various dignitaries, sports and dental professionals, academic leaders, students, and members of the dental fraternity.
